EDITORIAL:  TEEN CHOICE: SURF BOARDS & SCREAMS - UNDERWHELMING?

Was there anything really memorable about the 2011 Teen Choice Award show? A memorable performance a la JLo and Tom Cruise? A memorable sliming of an A-list star like Will Smith? The anticipation of the show seemed more memorable with all of the humorous tweets wondering if Robert Pattinson would appear than the show itself.  Twilight star, Bronson Pelletiere even tweeted that the "Teen Choice Awards was a lot more fun last year. Just saying."  Trust us when we say, this is a guy who likes to have fun and if he didn't, that's saying a lot.

With Jason DeRulo's technical difficulties  and Ashton Kutcher's impromptu sing-a-long, well, you get the picture.  Maybe the sing-a-long was kind of cute but it went a bit too long.  Only a baseball game on Fox delays the 10 o'clock news and Ashton was really cutting into acceptance speech time.  Wonder if the Harry Potter presentation was a bit rushed at the end because of it, we'll never know.

Ok, the Demi Lovato and the Sean Kingston comebacks were good. Even Robert Pattinson's slightly nervous and unexpected non-MTVesk heartfelt acceptance speech about the Cancer Bites campaign was interesting and informative.  Pattinson spoke about raising awareness about blood cancers while accepting the Choice Vampire award. But after that, really, where was the excitement?

All the audience heard at home were screams. It felt like the program was for the audience in that building rather than curtailing it to the audience at home as well. So, what made the program interesting? Certainly not the hostess whose ping-pong skit, amongst other things, was less than entertaining.

It is understood that this is a program for teenagers but that's no excuse when adults can also enjoy the Nickelodeon awards. Now that's fun and entertaining. Ping-pong? If the Chinese or Forrest Gump are not playing, yawn.

The Hostess? Skits? Jokes? Underwhelming.

Teen Choice should take a few pointers from MTV or at least Nickelodean as far as entertainment value.  The stars that the kids love were definitely there (even first time attendee Justin Beiber) but the show did not live up to its company.

Both Twilight and Harry Potter stars were there not to mention our 'Huntsman', Chris Hemsworth who did not win in his category. But Kristen Stewart appears to have been the lucky one.  She at least had a good excuse not to be there.

Stewart did not win which we're pretty sure she's not loosing any sleep over it since she's prepping for her blockbuster movie 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.  A Teen Choice Liplock award kind of leaves you cold.  Besides she had already won the real kissing award at the MTV Movie Awards where it really counted.

The Harry Potter summer enthusiasm won out even with the 'Liplock'. Chris Hemsworth presented along with Zoe Saldana the Harry Potter awards with special appearances by Tom Felton and Rupert Grint who were there live as well as Daniel Radcliffe appeared live by satellite.

Harry Potter is definitely hot right now with 'Deathly Hallows Part 2" making over $1 billion world-wide as well as breaking box office records. So it is not surprising to see them win awards at this time particularly since the last Twilight movie was out last summer.   However,  the Twilight gang received their fair share of awards.

Stewart will have to wait to make up for it when 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" arrives in theaters this November. There should be plenty of "liplocks" to remember in that one.

The complete list of winners is located below. We posted a few pictures as well as a video of Chris Hemsworth co-presenting the award to Harry Potter.  There are also links to more photographs of the event.  Enjoy!
