WINSTONE SHAVES HEAD & EYEBROWS FOR DARK DICKENS' ROLE

Over a span of three days this Christmas, UK fans will have the opportunity to see Ray Winstone give his interpretation of the Charles Dickens' character, Abel Magwitch, in the Dickens' classic Great Expectations.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Winstone describes his character:

To bring this dark character to life, Winstone shaved both his head and eyebrows, "There were a lot of lice around in those days and it just felt right for a prisoner. Because I’m a convict who fled the country, I’m also covered in tattoos from around the world – Maori ones, Indian ones, all that," Winstone said.

"Winstone’s portrayal of escaped convict Abel Magwitch is something of a homage to David Lean’s 1946 version. “I remember when I was a boy, seeing the black-and-white film with Alec Guinness and John Mills,” he recalls. “There was a great old Scottish character actor called Finlay Currie playing Magwitch. This role was all done for me in a way, because you can’t beat that image of this big bald guy looming out of a windy graveyard by the marshes. You don’t know if he’s human, the Creature from the Black Lagoon or Frankenstein’s monster. It frightened the life out of me as a kid.”

Great Expectations will be on BBC One on December 27-29 at 9:00pm.
