COULD SWATH HAVE OSCAR POTENTIAL?

Universal

As the world was looking at the new SWATH footage released yesterday forming their own "Best of" lists, Alt Film Guide takes a look at SWATH from the awards' perspective.

From what they have seen of the footage, AFG sees Oscar potential.

"Snow White and the Huntsman is one of the (very) few Hollywood movies I'm eager to watch next summer...Snow White and the Huntsman is definitely far, far different. from the bowdlerized, sentimentalized Disney fairy-tale we're used to."

"Sanders' film, in fact, probably looks and feels more like the original Snow White, as imagined by some creative (and twisted?) mind in the Europe of the Middle Ages, long before the Brothers Grimm put the story down on paper. One crucial difference, of course, is that this Snow White becomes a warrior along the lines of Joan of Arc. And besides, Snow White and the Huntsman offers touches from Fritz Lang's Die Niebelungen, moments that resemble the magical world of Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and even bits that reminded me of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time book series."

"Needless to say, the trailer is gorgeous. I can't imagine Snow White and the Huntsman not being shortlisted in a variety of categories come next awards season."

Needless to say, we agree that Sander's visuals and direction, cinematography, special effects, costumes along with Charlize Theron as 'The Evil Queen' look ripe for an Oscar nod.  Hopefully, with this potential, we are looking for Best Film as well.
