UNIVERSAL HITS BOX OFFICE GOLD WITH 'TED' AS SWATH CONTINUES TO DO WELL WORLDWIDE

Universal

After a shaky start to the summer season with Battleship, Universal is coming back strong with two of its films, SWATH and its new release Ted which had a record breaking opening this weekend for an R-rated film.

SWATH is still holding strong in the Top 10 at #9 in its 5th week with all of the new releases.  It is only a few thousand difference between 7th -10th place even with the minor reduction in theater count.  SWATH has made and estimated $145,591,000 Domestically; as of June 24th  $189,000,000 Foreign for a total of $334,591,000 worldwide.

More after the jump.

SWATH has had to contend with being a 2D action film among all of the 3D and IMAX film releases.  SWATH is about to loose more theaters with major releases opening in July which include of Spiderman for the United States July 4th weekend on July 3rd, the kid friendly film Ice Age: Continental Drift (July 13) and The Dark Knight Rises (July 20).

However, SWATH still has two more countries to be released (Italy in July and Venezuela in August).  SWATH is still holding strong overseas at #4, according to THR.  It is behind two new releases:  Ice Age which opened at #1, Spiderman which opened limited at #2 and Madagascar 3 at #3.

THR states, "Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, the weekend’s No. 4 title, drew $14.5 million from some 6,000 situations in 60 markets. Director Rupert Sanders’ period action fantasy costarring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron has grossed a total of $189 million so far overseas."

This means SWATH has taken over both Prometheus and MIB 3.

Universal has a box office smash no matter what happens after this weekend with their new release Ted.  Ted, directed Family Guy's Seth McFarland who is also the voice of  'Ted', stars Mark Wahlberg who plays the grown up boy who wished for a friend then magic happens when his teddy bear comes to life and the hijinks ensues.

According to THR, Ted  was originally scheduled for release on July 13th, however Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation moved from their June 29th release date in order to add 3D.

Ted was estimated to make $28 million for the entire weekend, however it blew away all box office predictions making an estimated $54,107,495 according to ERC Box Office, making it the best opening for an R-rated comedy.
