UNIVERSAL'S 'FIFTY SHADES OF GREY' HITS HISTORIC MILESTONE ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITH 100 MILLION VIEWS

Screen shot (Universal)

No matter how hard the studios and entertainment media try to brush off the female audience and treat them as "trendy second-class citizens" especially up against those pesky fanboys with their almighty superheros and going as far as dropping actresses from sequels replacing them with actors then renaming them prequels, this audience will come if you give it something it wants to see (no pun intended).

More after the break

The Fifty Shades of Grey trailer broke viewing records with a historic 100 million views throughout various media outlets, according to Deadline.  Even Variety's B+ score of the trailer could be considered underwhelming keeping in mind the amount of views it had.

"...nearly 33 million YouTube views logged in a week from Universal’s two official uploads alone."

"'Fifty Shades Of Grey trailers are pulling monumental views' from two separate uploads this week, said RelishMix CEO Marc Karzen." The trailer on Universal’s YouTube channel attracted more than 13 million views, and its UK sibling did even better, with 19.3 million. 'Add to that ripped and reposted versions on movie fan channels. It’s unprecedented for a film that’s six months out.'"

Universal is, again, capitalizing on at least a portion the crossover Twilight audience with FSoG.  Its fansites, including fansites of lead actor Jamie Dornan, have a level of followers equal or close to those of Twilight. FSoG is based on a Twilight fan fiction titled 'Master of the Universe' based on the actors and characters played by SWATH's Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Focus Features along with Universal has their sights on turning the erotic international best-selling book into a blockbuster film which is currently rumored to receive either a 'PG-13' or an 'R' rating.

According to Deadline, there was a marketing campaign which began with a teaser trailer which premiered on the Instagram account of the R&B/Pop/Soul Grammy award-winning singer BeyoncĂ© who brings a remix version of her song 'Crazy in Love' to the trailer.

Sidebar:  For those who have been hiding under a rock or complaining about how much you hate the books and refused to read them or just plain refuse to read them for whatever reason or pretending not to like them until you get a chance to hideout and read them before the film is released, Anastasia dances around Grey's kitchen singing and dancing while cooking to the original 2003 version of the song.

The preliminary marketing of the trailer led to the first highly anticipated side-by-side live television interview with lead actors Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) and Dornan (Christian Grey) on NBC's Today Show where the world premiere of the first trailer (at least what could be seen on morning television) was shown.

"...the full trailer dropped at 8:15 AM ET [July 24] and became the most-watched trailer on YouTube that day in a surge of buzz that Ben Carlson of social network tracker Fizziology calls “simply unprecedented.” The trailer garnered 98,000 mentions per hour on Twitter and was the No. 1 Google-trending topic in the U.S., Canada, the UK, France, and Germany."

"An additional 13 million uploads were viewed on additional platforms including Yahoo, IMDb, and Apple in addition to over 900,000 trailer views via unofficial YouTube uploads, according to Universal. It had over 40 million additional views on Facebook across the studio’s domestic and international channels as well as Beyonce’s Facebook page, where the trailer alone racked up 446,000 likes and 222,000 shares," according to Deadline.

The trailer was released in time to be seen in theaters before Universal's Lucy.

FSoG will hit theaters on Valentine's Day 2015.
