OSCAR BITS:  BEHIND THE SCENES STYLING OF CHARLIZE & KRISTEN

Stylists are to an Oscar red carpet as money is to a bank.  You cannot survive with out them.

The LA Times and Style.com pay homage to the unseen but extremely important people who can make or break their clients in front of millions of onlookers.

Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart are seen in a behind-the-scenes feature as Style.com followed four of Hollywood's top stylists while they readied their A-list clients for the Oscars red carpet.  They were able to observe all of the final preparations and fittings to perfect their looks.

More after the jump

Charlize's stylist Leslie Fremar explained to Style.com how they decided on her Dior Haute Couture gown and its design.

"Dior and I discussed a white gown with a beaded peplum waist; in early January, they sent sketches, and I reviewed them with Charlize. Dior ended up making two top options: a strapless corset top and a deep V-neck backless top. Charlize and I decided to go with the corset because it felt more structured and modern."

Stylist Tara Swennen tells Style.com that she had two dress options ready because of Kristen's foot injury.

"Here's the night's lineup, all set up and ready to go—with backup flats as options for each look. Not even crutches can stop this girl. She's simply stunning."

And she was right.  Crutches did not stop Kristen at all as we see all smiles in the before and after photos showing that nothing can keep her spirit down.

Swennen expressed her pride in a tweet as Kristen dawned the red carpet and may have sent Kristen's name trending on Twitter yesterday:

Both Kristen and Charlize are featured in the LA Times slide show as they highlight the style extremes taken by stylists and designers as seen on the red carpet.

"The two looks said it all about this year's Oscar red carpet at the Dolby Theatre: It was about extremes. One of the biggest trends of the night? Icy, pale shades. Many of the dresses were of the frothy, fairy-tale variety, namely Amy Adams' pale blue, frayed organza Oscar de la Renta princess gown; Octavia Spencer's blush tulle, one-shoulder Tadashi Shoji cream puff creation; and Jennifer Lawrence's strapless pale pink-and-white Dior bustier ball gown.

Charlize Theron's sculptural white silk Dior peplum gown was more ice queen, especially with her sleek new hairstyle."
