SAM SPRUELL KEEPS HIS BAD GUY CRED IN 'TAKEN 3' AS IT HOLDS STRONG OVER THE HEMSWORTH'S 'BLACKHAT'

(Fox): Liam Neeson on left and Sam Spruell on right in fight scene in Taken 3.

Sam Spruell's 'Finn' may have been "taken" out by Chris Hemsworth's 'Huntsman' in SWATH, but after the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend, Spruell clearly made up for it.

Spruell's 'Taken 3' crushed Hemsworth's 'Blackhat' at the box office.

'Taken 3' starring Liam Neeson, took in $14.625 million this weekend and $63.412 million overall after one week of release coming in 4th behind the surprising box office smash American Sniper, The Wedding Ringer and Paddington, according to Box Office Mojo.

'Blackhat' the action thriller starring Hemsworth, directed by Michael Mann and distributed by Universal did not receive positive headlines coming in 10th place with a paltry $3.838 million at the box office with a reported $70 million dollar production budget.

The public is not either interested in the hacker film or not believing Hemsworth as a hacker.  If this was supposed to be a fluff piece for Hemsworth using his popularity to generate box office, it didn't work -- at least domestically.

However, there may be a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for 'Blackhat' when it opens more overseas particularly in Asian markets due to its diverse cast which includes Asian stars.

************

Spruell handles his bad guy cred in this final installment with ease taking out a few people including one of the beloved characters.

Spruell's 'Oleg Malankov' is not 'Finn'. This guy has lots of sex appeal with hot tubs, women, tattoos and abs. Spruell in his tighty whities in a fight scene with Neeson  is enough to make a girl blush.

'Taken 3' sees the return of the "ex-covert operative Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) and his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), [who]are enjoying a reconciliation when Lenore is brutally murdered. Bryan is framed for the crime and flees, with the CIA, FBI and police all in hot pursuit. For the last time, he channels his rage and particular set of skills into hunting down Lenore's real killers, taking his revenge and protecting the one important thing left in his life: his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace)."  [Google]

THE EVIL QUEEN'S BROTHER: SAM SPRUELL TALKS ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUEEN

There has been vigorous debate about Sam Spruell's character 'Fin', his relationship with Ravenna and what powers, if any, they both hold.

In one of the trailers, you can see Snow White scratch Finn in the face in one clip and as he turns to chase her, the scratch disappears.  Let the debate begin!

Does Finn and Ravenna have magical powers that allow them to heal quickly?  Apparently so because they cannot die!

Spruell talks about the uniqueness of their characters during an interview with Cult Box.

"...there’s a wicked queen played by Charlize Theron and I play her brother. These are a brother and sister evil double act that have been ruling for the last 150 years."

"Their mother cast a spell meaning that they would live forever so they’ve kinda been together forever for a very long time, they’re kinda like a criminal family, and the cracks are starting to show on both of them when you see them in the film. Finn is quite a messed up boy in many respects and then a very protective man when it comes to his sister."

Spruell talks about his fight sequences, changing his hair, working with Charlize Theron and fighting Chris Hemsworth and more.

Check out the entire interview here.

DISNEY DIDN'T WANT SWATH, HISTORY OF DWARFS & SPRUELL'S 'FINN'

Universal

SWATH director Rupert Sanders WonderCon post interviews continue to give fans a lot of insight into SWATH.  Sanders spoke with LA Times Hero Complex writer Noelene Clark about the background of 'Finn' and the dwarfs.

Sanders also talks about how Disney rejected SWATH and what Disney's effect was on how SWATH was made.

NC: I understand the eight dwarfs in your film are different than previous incarnations of the classic characters. Can you tell us a little about your dwarf mythology?

RS: They’re not called Happy, Grumpy, Sneezy and Dopey. In our film, they used to noble gold miners because they could see light in the darkness, and they see that light in Snow White. But while they were down in the caves, the Queen took over, and when they came up, the land was blackened, and all of their tribe was lost. So they’ve lost everything, and they’ve become highwaymen, basically. So they meet our characters by trying to rob them. They basically beat the … out of both of them, and lynch them, and then try to take all their money. And then she kind of bonds them together, and they all go off together and continue the journey.

NC: And your dwarfs are portrayed by an incredible lineup of British actors, including Nick Frost.

RS: We’ve got Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Johnny Harris and Brian Gleeson — really amazing.

Another actor I think is stunning in the film, who really plays more of the villain, ironically, than the Queen, is her younger brother. He’s called Sam Spruell, who plays Finn, who’s the one with white hair. He’s incredible. I saw him in a small British gangster movie called “London to Brighton,” and I was like, I gotta get that guy. He’s stunning in it.

NC: Have you received any pushback from Disney?

RS: It’s not their property. They can whistle as loud as they like. Ironically, we went to Disney first with the project. They didn’t want it. It’s not owned by Disney. It’s public domain. There is no copyright. There are things they did to the story that are Disney, but the story is for everyone, which is great. So I haven’t heard from Walt.
