ANONYMOUS DIRECTOR'S OSCAR BALLOT STATES SWATH SHOULD WIN BEST COSTUME (BUT WON'T): INNOVATIVE BUT LACKS PUFFINESS 

Sometimes it is just nice to see someone actually have a "pair" and state the truth instead of what is popular. 

The Hollywood Reporter got their hands on an Oscar ballot from an "unnamed" director and his comments on the ballot are stated to be "brutally honest."  

To the most touted, popular and hyped (see anything Weintstein), you're just not getting your due with this guy.  He takes on the nominations and he takes no prisoners.

THR writes, "His main issue, in fact, is with the studios that have inundated him with promotional swag, most of which he doesn’t want. “I’ve gotten books, cookbooks and just about everything short of Lincoln condoms,” he cracked. “It’s ridiculous.” Eventually, we got down to business, and, in no particular order, touched upon all 24 Oscar categories."

UNIVERSAL WINS BIG AT BAFTAS

Universal Studios should be pretty cheery about their wins at the 66th Annual EE British Academy of Film and Television Arts ("BAFTA") Awards held tonight at the Royal Opera House in London.

Universal's Les Misérables led the award winners with 4 awards for Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Production Design, Hair & Makeup and Sound.

SWATH's Colleen Atwood did not win Costume Design, however Universal's Anna Karenina costume designer Jacqueline Durran did win.

Special effects company Rhythm & Hues who worked on the effects for SWATH won for Special Visual Effects for Life of Pi. 

Argo was the second biggest winner receiving 3 BAFTAs for Best Film, Director and Editing. Skyfall, Pi and Django Unchained were the other big winners.

SWATH COSTUMES TO BE DISPLAYED IN 
LOS ANGELES EXHIBIT

Academy Award winner/nominee Colleen Atwood will have her outstanding costuming for SWATH on display at the 21st Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising ("FDIM") Museum and Galleries in Los Angeles.

The exhibit will showcase over 100 pieces seen in film in 2012 including from all five Oscar nominees, according to the Los Angeles Times.  

Costumes from designers such as Paco Delgado (Les Misérables), Jacqueline Durran (Anna Karenina), Joanna Johnston (Lincoln), Jany Temime (Skyfall) and Julie Weiss (Hitchcock), Eiko Ishioka (Mirror Mirror) and Judianna Makovsky (The Hunger Games) will be on display. 

The exhibit is open free to the public from February 12th - April 27th at FDIM's museum located at 919 S. Grand Avenue Downtown Los Angeles. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

THE EVOLUTION OF ATWOOD'S SWATH COSTUME DESIGNS

Academy Award winner and nominee Colleen Atwood talks with the New York Times about her approach and the challenges of making the costumes for SWATH.

Both Snow White and the Huntsman wear, for the most part, the same costume throughout the film. But they go through a number of transitions in the costumes. 

“There was the challenge of making something that people can wear that long, that they can do a lot of action in, and that you don’t get sick of looking at,” Ms. Atwood said. 

Because the film has Snow White (Kristen Stewart) trudging through the woods and moving through water and dirt, the character didn’t need to be stuck in a long dress. The Huntsman cuts it off to allow for more freedom of movement. “I put leather leggings on her, kind of what guys wore in the period, under her dress,” she said. “Once he hacked off her dress, it gave it a hipper look. When you take a period and evoke something young people can relate to, they really connect with it.”

LIGHT & DARK: COMPARING THE TWO SNOW WHITE'S OSCAR NOMINATED COSTUME DESIGNERS

The Snow White movie comparisons continue as the costume designers for both Snow White films released in 2012 (SWATH and Mirror, Mirror) are nominated for Academy Awards.

The Los Angeles Times takes a look at the costume designs and the color pallet decisions made by costume designers Colleen Atwood of SWATH and the late Eiko Ishioka of Mirror, Mirror.

Although each film is based upon the same Snow White story, each costume designer has taken on the characteristics of their films. SWATH is a darker dramatic version and Mirror, Mirror is more comedic and lighter. 

The "two productions are on opposite ends of light and dark, fantasy and fear."  "Ishioka, who died of pancreatic cancer last January, uses bright, almost Technicolor saturated hues — vibrant reds, blues, yellows, pinks, oranges and whites — Atwood works more subtly in the luscious dark and muted earth tones of navy, teal, taupe, gold and ivory. These core palettes invoke the magic or mystery and light or dark emotion of each film."

For Atwood, the appeal came down to the sheer fun of being able to go so over the top. "Snow White and the Huntsman," she says, "was a feast of creativity to me. Amazing characters, extraordinary Queen, Snow White, the evil brother, two armies, three courts — I built more costumes for this movie than I ever have." But the designs had to do so much more than look startlingly dramatic, they had to hold up as well. "Hand-embroidered gold dresses that did action as well as being drug through an oil slick!" Atwood says. There were 30 to 40 costume duplicates for both Stewart's Snow White and for Chris Hemsworth's Hunstman, she adds, since the costumes "went through all the elements."

According to Deadline, Atwood was one of the nominees who had to stand the longest time before the photo was taken.

ATWOOD & SWATH NAB ANOTHER NOMINATION FROM THE 
COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD

Another nomination for SWATH's award-winning costume designer and this time it is from the Costume Designers Guild. 

Colleen Atwood was nominated for Excellence in Fantasy Film for her costume work in SWATH. The 15th Annual awards presentation will be held on February 19th at the Beverly Hills Hilton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The nominees in her category are as follows:

COLLEEN ATWOOD POISED TO  MAKE OSCAR HISTORY WITH A WIN

Holding steady at nine Oscar wins, if Colleen Atwood wins at this February's Oscar ceremony, she will be the most "Oscar lauded costume designer" as The Hollywood Reporter puts it. What more can one say about this?

"It’s a good day today,” is what Atwood said to THR during an interview yesterday.  Yeah, ok. We'll go with that.

Atwood is currently tied with costume designer Sandy Powell who created costumes for Shakespeare In Love (1999), Aviator (2004), Young Victoria (2010) and Hugo (2011), according to THR.

Atwood's creations were uniquely created for the world of Snow White and the Huntsman.  

THR:

"She calls Snow White a 'particularly stylistically challenging film. It was a great and very exciting design experience, and I always like to challenge myself.'"

According to THR, the technical awards will be issued on February 9th where she plans on wearing one of her own designs.  

“It's easy for me to design something and have it made quickly. I can figure that out myself.”
Who needs Valentino when you're a nine time Oscar-winning designer yourself.  You go girl!

Although there was a hope for Original Song and even Hair and Makeup, however the pride is still there for the nominations received for Snow White and the Huntsman for the 85th Academy Awards.  

As expected previous Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood was nominated for Costume Design.  Her work immediately in the opening scene.  A well deserved nomination.

Next was for the Visual Effects team (Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Philip Brennan, Neil Corbould and Michael Dawson) which is another well deserved nomination for their work particularly with the dwarfs and troll.

Universal Pictures received even bigger nominations with their film Les Miserables which received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and more. 

Their successful R-rated comedy Ted also received a nomination for Original Song for "Everybody Needs a Friend."

SWATH'S COLLEEN ATWOOD & UNIVERSAL'S 'LES MISERABLES' RECEIVE BAFTA NOMINATIONS

As anticipated, SWATH's very own Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood was nominated for an EE British Academy Film Award (BAFTA) today for Costume Design.

Atwood was nominated alongside Jacqueline Durran (ANNA KARENINA), Beatrix Aruna Pasztor (GREAT EXPECTATIONS),  Paco Delgado (LES MISÉRABLES) and Joanna Johnston (LINCOLN). 

Universal Pictures also received several nominations for its drama-musical Les Miserables including Best Film, Leading Actor (Hugh Jackman), Leading Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway).

'SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTMAN' IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN OSCAR HOWEVER...

Yes, we are happy but we are realists.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their list of 282 eligible feature films which can contend to receive an Oscar nomination for their 85th annual awards ceremony in February.

Snow White and the Huntsman made the list. 

Universal does have an opportunity to see one of its films as a Best Picture nominee but unfortunately, although we always hope for the best for our beloved SWATH, sometimes you just have to face reality and getting a Best Picture nod is just not in its cards.  However, we will always keep hope alive.  

SWATH has made a few short lists of eligible Oscar nominations for Hair and Makeup  as well as for Original Soundtrack. 

We have an expectation to see more technical nominations in the areas of costuming, special effects and possibly cinematography.  SWATH definitely deserves recognition in these areas.  Let's hope for the best.

SPANISH TV HOSTESS DRESSES IN QUEEN RAVENNA HALLOWEEN COSTUME

SWATH HITS THE WORLD OF TATTOOS

Wonder how Charlize Theron feels about being immortalized as Ravenna on someone's body part? You have to admit that this is pretty cool!

This tattoo created by Sarah Miller, shows that Queen Ravenna is a great cinematic character that will definitely be seen in years to come.  

Ravenna has already made an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con this year and was noted to be the hot SWATH costume this Halloween. But we think Snow White will give her a run for her money both in and out of armor.
