COLLEEN ATWOOD WINS HER 4TH BEST COSTUME DESIGN OSCAR!

She did it! SWATH's costume designer Colleen Atwood won her 4th Oscar Sunday evening at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held at the Dolby® Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Atwood clearly was surprised as she walked briskly to the stage to accept the golden statute for Best Costume Design. Singer/Song Writer/Oscar nominee Sting predicted she would win.

Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Nick Frost walked the black carpet Monday evening at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles for the premiere of The Huntsman: Winter's War.  

Fans were treated to a remarkable display of costumes from the film created by Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood.

SWATH'S COLLEEN ATWOOD BECOMING THE NEXT EDITH HEAD - GETS HER 11TH OSCAR NOMINATION FOR 'INTO THE WOODS'

She's done it again!!! Colleen Atwood received an Oscar nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design for 'Into the Woods'. This makes her "the most Oscar-nominated costume designer of any living person, according to the Hollywood Reporter.  They note that Edith Head had the most with 35 nominations.  

Atwood's up against Anna B. Shepherd for 'Maleficent' which was produced by SWATH producers Palak Patel and Joe Roth, Mark Bridges for 'Inherent Vice', Milena Canonero for  'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and Jacqueline Durran for 'Mr. Turner'. 

Atwood's costumes designs can be seen in 'Big Eyes' currently in theaters and Chris Hemsworth's movie 'Blackhat' opening on Friday.

The 'Boxtrolls' starring  SWATH's Nick Frost received a nomination for Best Animated Feature while Universal's 'Unbroken' received three nominations.

1-YEAR ANNIVERSARY: 

SWATH PREMIERE MAY 14, 2012

One year ago today on May 14, 2012, the World Premiere of Snow White and the Huntsman was held in London's Leicester Square.  Fans gathered around the Enchanted Forest-themed streets to meet the stars of the film.  

The event was broadcast live via the Official Snow White and the Huntsman Facebook page. The cast was interviewed while appearing on a jumbo screen located near the Empire Theater where the film was screened.  

Some of the film stars who walked the green carpet were Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, Nick Frost, Brian Gleeson, Sam Spruell, Lily Cole and Joey Ansah. 

During the live broadcast, fans could tweet about the premiere using a hashtag and then see their tweets appear on the jumbo screen.  Our Twitter logo was seen during an interview with costume designer Colleen Atwood. 

#SWATHpremiere also trended on Twitter worldwide. 

The cast appeared to be having a good time joking with each other and meeting the fans.  A few pictures of the fun mayhem are below.

ANONYMOUS DIRECTOR'S OSCAR BALLOT STATES SWATH SHOULD WIN BEST COSTUME (BUT WON'T): INNOVATIVE BUT LACKS PUFFINESS 

Sometimes it is just nice to see someone actually have a "pair" and state the truth instead of what is popular. 

The Hollywood Reporter got their hands on an Oscar ballot from an "unnamed" director and his comments on the ballot are stated to be "brutally honest."  

To the most touted, popular and hyped (see anything Weintstein), you're just not getting your due with this guy.  He takes on the nominations and he takes no prisoners.

THR writes, "His main issue, in fact, is with the studios that have inundated him with promotional swag, most of which he doesn’t want. “I’ve gotten books, cookbooks and just about everything short of Lincoln condoms,” he cracked. “It’s ridiculous.” Eventually, we got down to business, and, in no particular order, touched upon all 24 Oscar categories."

SWATH REPRESENTS AT OSCARS: KRISTEN STEWART TO PRESENT!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted that Kristen Stewart will be a presenter at the Oscars' ceremony this Sunday, February 24th. 

Stewart is no rookie with presenting at the Oscars.  In 2010, she presented alongside her Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner.

Charlize Theron will be making an appearance with costume designer Colleen Atwood and the Visual EFX team nominated for the prestigious award. SWATH will be well represented at the Oscars.

UNIVERSAL WINS BIG AT BAFTAS

Universal Studios should be pretty cheery about their wins at the 66th Annual EE British Academy of Film and Television Arts ("BAFTA") Awards held tonight at the Royal Opera House in London.

Universal's Les Misérables led the award winners with 4 awards for Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Production Design, Hair & Makeup and Sound.

SWATH's Colleen Atwood did not win Costume Design, however Universal's Anna Karenina costume designer Jacqueline Durran did win.

Special effects company Rhythm & Hues who worked on the effects for SWATH won for Special Visual Effects for Life of Pi. 

Argo was the second biggest winner receiving 3 BAFTAs for Best Film, Director and Editing. Skyfall, Pi and Django Unchained were the other big winners.

SWATH COSTUMES TO BE DISPLAYED IN 
LOS ANGELES EXHIBIT

Academy Award winner/nominee Colleen Atwood will have her outstanding costuming for SWATH on display at the 21st Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising ("FDIM") Museum and Galleries in Los Angeles.

The exhibit will showcase over 100 pieces seen in film in 2012 including from all five Oscar nominees, according to the Los Angeles Times.  

Costumes from designers such as Paco Delgado (Les Misérables), Jacqueline Durran (Anna Karenina), Joanna Johnston (Lincoln), Jany Temime (Skyfall) and Julie Weiss (Hitchcock), Eiko Ishioka (Mirror Mirror) and Judianna Makovsky (The Hunger Games) will be on display. 

The exhibit is open free to the public from February 12th - April 27th at FDIM's museum located at 919 S. Grand Avenue Downtown Los Angeles. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

THE EVOLUTION OF ATWOOD'S SWATH COSTUME DESIGNS

Academy Award winner and nominee Colleen Atwood talks with the New York Times about her approach and the challenges of making the costumes for SWATH.

Both Snow White and the Huntsman wear, for the most part, the same costume throughout the film. But they go through a number of transitions in the costumes. 

“There was the challenge of making something that people can wear that long, that they can do a lot of action in, and that you don’t get sick of looking at,” Ms. Atwood said. 

Because the film has Snow White (Kristen Stewart) trudging through the woods and moving through water and dirt, the character didn’t need to be stuck in a long dress. The Huntsman cuts it off to allow for more freedom of movement. “I put leather leggings on her, kind of what guys wore in the period, under her dress,” she said. “Once he hacked off her dress, it gave it a hipper look. When you take a period and evoke something young people can relate to, they really connect with it.”

LIGHT & DARK: COMPARING THE TWO SNOW WHITE'S OSCAR NOMINATED COSTUME DESIGNERS

The Snow White movie comparisons continue as the costume designers for both Snow White films released in 2012 (SWATH and Mirror, Mirror) are nominated for Academy Awards.

The Los Angeles Times takes a look at the costume designs and the color pallet decisions made by costume designers Colleen Atwood of SWATH and the late Eiko Ishioka of Mirror, Mirror.

Although each film is based upon the same Snow White story, each costume designer has taken on the characteristics of their films. SWATH is a darker dramatic version and Mirror, Mirror is more comedic and lighter. 

The "two productions are on opposite ends of light and dark, fantasy and fear."  "Ishioka, who died of pancreatic cancer last January, uses bright, almost Technicolor saturated hues — vibrant reds, blues, yellows, pinks, oranges and whites — Atwood works more subtly in the luscious dark and muted earth tones of navy, teal, taupe, gold and ivory. These core palettes invoke the magic or mystery and light or dark emotion of each film."

For Atwood, the appeal came down to the sheer fun of being able to go so over the top. "Snow White and the Huntsman," she says, "was a feast of creativity to me. Amazing characters, extraordinary Queen, Snow White, the evil brother, two armies, three courts — I built more costumes for this movie than I ever have." But the designs had to do so much more than look startlingly dramatic, they had to hold up as well. "Hand-embroidered gold dresses that did action as well as being drug through an oil slick!" Atwood says. There were 30 to 40 costume duplicates for both Stewart's Snow White and for Chris Hemsworth's Hunstman, she adds, since the costumes "went through all the elements."

ATWOOD & SWATH NAB ANOTHER NOMINATION FROM THE 
COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD

Another nomination for SWATH's award-winning costume designer and this time it is from the Costume Designers Guild. 

Colleen Atwood was nominated for Excellence in Fantasy Film for her costume work in SWATH. The 15th Annual awards presentation will be held on February 19th at the Beverly Hills Hilton, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

ART OF ELYSIUM HONORS 
OSCAR NOMINEE COLLEEN ATWOOD WITH VISIONARY AWARD

The Art of Elysium's 6th Annual Heaven Gala honored the work of Oscar nominee Colleen Atwood on Saturday in Los Angeles with their Visionary Award.  The star-studded event displayed costumes from her films Snow White and the Huntsman, Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd.

Founded in 1997, "Art of Elysium encourages working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions."

Atwood recently received her 10th Academy Award nomination last week where she is poised to make history if she wins giving her the most Oscar wins for a costume designer.
