DEPRESSION, BOXING AND A BEARD: JOHNNY HARRIS' JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE MAKES HIM THE ACTOR HE IS TODAY

Johnny Harris at the House of St Barnabas, London.

“I am who I am. And without my past I don’t think I’d be the actor that I am; I don’t think I’d have the same references. Sometimes,” he says, “I think this is how it was meant to be.”

We know him as the lovable caring dwarf and son who sings in Snow White and the Huntsman; however, Johnny Harris hasn't played such kind characters throughout his career.  The one which won him his BAFTA was as vile as any character could be.

To be able to play such a range of characters didn't come easy to Harris. In a Guardian interview, Harris poignantly talks about his his humble journey into acting which included a stint as a boxer, a bout with depression, alcohol and homelessness.

Most people have a delusional belief that actors come from high society, private schools and rich parents. But what you find is that they are just like us. Working folks going through life ups and downs just trying to make it but instead of driving a bus or becoming a doctor, they want to be actors.

Harris believed, as most actors do, once you get that one part, you're a star.  But sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

"In 2000, Harris did secure his first major screen job – the film Gangster No 1. “It was massively exciting. They flew me first class to Berlin and I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m a movie star! I’ve cracked it!’” When this turned out not to be the case, he sunk into a depression. He finds it hard to pinpoint when he became an alcoholic, but for 10 to 15 years, he was “just keeping a face on things”."

Things went downhill from there. His friend who worked with Harris in Gangster No. 1 and who would later star with him in a blockbuster film called Snow White and the Huntsman, Eddie Marsan, gave Harris some help during this troubling time.

"Helping out a friend in need, fellow actor Eddie Marsan, who he had worked with on Gangster No. 1, introduced him to the Union Theatre in Southwark. “He was directing a play there,” remembers Harris, “and I was really skint at the time, so I think he got me to paint the set.”

Harris distance himself from both family and friends over a period of four years and became homeless under his own will. He slept on streets although he knew he had places to go.  It was a low time in his life where he turned to alcohol.

"Eventually, Harris got help. “2004 was my lowest point,” he says now. In 2006, completely clean, he completed his first major role sober, in London to Brighton. Around the same time he met his wife, an adoption worker based in an office next door to the Union Theatre. This year, he celebrates his 10th anniversary of sobriety."

*********

Harris and his acting career took off.  Today Harris has played many characters and most who are not known for their charm.

"His ability to play sociopaths on screen seems a true talent; in real life, Harris is relentlessly cheery, gentlemanly, charming."

The notable item which the characters have in common is a beard. It may seem funny, but the Harris beard has had an effect on a few of his fans who were initially introduced to Harris through the heinous character in 'This is England '86'.

"It has been four years since Harris enacted one of the most harrowing scenes I’ve seen on television. Even now, when he wears a beard, he understands that people are still reminded of Mick, the serial sex offender he played in Shane Meadows’s This Is England ’86. His horrific raping of Trev at the end of the acclaimed first series landed Harris a Bafta nomination, but perhaps more importantly for him, it also saw viewers take to Twitter to share their feelings of grief, horror and shock: “I guess for me, that was the real gauge of whether I’d done the role justice. I remember one person saying that when they watched they could hardly breathe.”"

His beard has become a true signature through many characters.

From left: Harris in the television series 'The Fades', Snow White and the Huntsman
and currently in the television series 'Fortitude'.

"These days, the beard is becoming a frequent feature of his work, the common denominator in a wardrobe of characters that are all damaged in some way: his gangster in Welcome to the Punch; a man living on the edge in Jack Thorne’s BBC horror The Fades and now the quietly menacing Ronnie in Sky Atlantic’s Fortitude. Beard Fear, we agree, shows no signs of abating."

*********

Beard or no beard fans have nothing to fear. The real gentle and kindhearted man is far cry from the troubled characters onscreen.

Johnny Harris has become who he is because of his life experiences. What he has gone through has made him the great actor he is today. Life will do that.

“I am who I am. And without my past I don’t think I’d be the actor that I am; I don’t think I’d have the same references. Sometimes,” he says, “I think this is how it was meant to be.”

A CLOSER LOOK AT JOHNNY HARRIS IN TV THE SERIES 'FORTITUDE' ~ PREMIERES JANUARY 29TH

Sky Atlantic

It looks mighty cold on the set of the new 12-part television series Fortitude which stars SWATH's Johnny Harris.  Fortitude is set to premiere Thursday, January 29 at 10pm ET on Pivot TV and also on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

Shot in Iceland which substitutes as the Arctic, Harris plays Ronnie Morgan, a miner with secrets, who moves to build a new life in a town.  A show which has the tagline, "It's not only the cold that kills" doesn't too sound good for the future of the locals.

Led by Stanley Tucci (Hunger Games), Fortitude stars Michael Gambon (Harry Potter),
Sofie Gråbøl (The Killing) and Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who).

Described as "Twin Peaks meets frozen tundra," Fortitude is set in a small close knit town which has had no violent crimes until a murder sets things in motion.

Fortitude will be shown on Pivot TV which is a relatively new television station launched August 1, 2013.  Check here to see where it is being shown in your area.

To get familiar with the cast and story, take a look at a few behind-the-scenes videos including Harris describing his character below.

JOHNNY HARRIS SPEAKS OF FOND MEMORIES WORKING ON SWATH WITH KRISTEN STEWART - "SHE'S A 'MOVIE STAR"

Kristen Stewart has left a memorable impression on her SWATH co-star Johnny Harris who recently spoke highly of the young star during a red carpet interview at the 'Star Wars Rebel' London premiere.

When asked about Stewart, Harris said, "She's just a fine young lady." "She's a terrific actress."

Harris fondly recalls the rehearsals with Stewart along with the other dwarf actors which consisted of a group of great British actors well-known for their tough-guy roles.

"I always smile -- I remember the rehearsals, you know we would turn up...we're all quite big characters the guys playing the dwarves you know...Ray [Winstone] and Bob [Hoskins], Ian McShane and ah...Eddie (Marsan) and Toby [Jones] and Nick [Frost]...um she [Stewart] just came in immediately and...rolled her sleeves up and um stuck in with us."

Harris continued, "...and she was our leader."

Harris beamed further stating that Stewart was"a great actress...a movie star."  He calls Stewart one of the "biggest movie stars of her generation"  and a "huge ticket seller."

That's very high praise for Stewart coming from the BAFTA winning actor.

Harris states he is looking forward to seeing Stewart's film, Camp X-Ray, which is being screened at the London Film Festival.

Harris will be attending the festival for the world premiere of his film Monsters: Dark Continent.

"It's my first lead role in a movie..so, um I'm excited for it." "I want the world see it."

A miracle of high ambition and low budget, Gareth Edwards’ 2010 debut Monsters redefined what was possible for both British sci-fi and indie cinema. Taking his cue from the first film’s subtle layering of human drama over jaw-dropping visual effects, first-time feature director Tom Green has expanded Edwards’ universe to the Middle East where, seven years after the events that first brought an alien infestation of squid-like creatures to the Earth, there are now quarantined Infected Zones, just as there once were in Mexico. As wars continue to break out in the region, American forces, led by jaded veteran Noah (Johnny Harris), find themselves vulnerable on two fronts – fighting these extra-terrestrial invaders while defending themselves from local insurgents in whose land they are seen, ironically, to also be invaders. Mixing social comment with spectacle, Monsters: Dark Continent is a rare sequel that respects its predecessor’s belief in the right combination of realism and wonder. ~~  Damon Wise

KRISTEN STEWART COMPLETES ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE WITH DIRTY BATH WATER?!

Kristen Stewart completed her ALS Ice Bucket Challenge alongside her 'Equals' co-star Nicholas Hoult and crew member Scott Fahrendorf. Stewart was nominated by her Jenny Lewis video co-star Anne Hathaway.

Both were so cute completing their challenges uniquely by dunking their heads in buckets of  "dirty bath water" holding them down and then tossing them on their heads.

Stewart ended her challenge by stating that the use of dirty bath water was to promote water conservation in California. California is currently going through a tremendous drought. It takes Stewart to kill to birds with one stone thinking charitably on both fronts.

Stewart nominated Max Thierot (friend and co-star from 'Catch That Kid') , singer Jenny Lewis, Brie Larson (who also co-starred in the Lewis video) and another 'Equals' co-star Jacki Weaver.

Hoult nominated actor Joe Dempsie who co-stars with SWATH's Johnny Harris in their upcoming film 'Monsters: Dark Continent', actor Colin Firth and Craig Roberts.

Check out the video below (Warning: Language) and donate to ALS here.

JOHNNY HARRIS TO STAR IN NEW TV DRAMA 'FORTITUDE' WITH STANLEY TUCCI & HARRY POTTER'S MICHAEL GAMBON

SWATH's Johnny Harris is starring alongside some acting heavy hitters in his new project.  Harris is set to star in a Sky Atlantic twelve episode drama called Fortitude.

BAFTA nominee Harris will be join Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci (Hunger Games), BAFTA award winner Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) and Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World) in this television drama about a "mysterious death in the Arctic Circle." Filming is set to take place in Iceland and the UK.

Harris will be seen later this year in his upcoming film Monsters: Dark Continent.

Read more about the series below.

"Fortitude is a place like nowhere else. Although surrounded by the savage beauty of the Arctic landscape, Fortitude is one of the safest towns on earth. There has never been a violent crime here. Until now. In such a close-knit community a murder touches everyone and the unsettling, mysterious horror of this crime threatens the future of the town itself.

The local Chief of Police, Sheriff Dan Anderssen (Dormer), has to investigate alongside DCI Morton (Tucci), the detective who has flown into Fortitude so fast that questions are being asked about how much he knew, and when. As these two cops try to make sense of the killing, each finds compelling reasons to mistrust and suspect the other.

The murder is a catastrophe for Hildur Odegard (Grabol), the town's Governor. It threatens her ambitious plans to transform Fortitude from a mining town into a site for high-end tourism. And for Henry Tyson (Gambon), a wildlife photographer who only has weeks left to live, the murder is the catalyst to unearthing Fortitude's darkest secret.

Also key to the story are Charlie Stoddart (Eccleston), an English scientist who heads up the Arctic Biology department at the Fortitude Arctic Research Centre, talented young scientist Vincent Rattrey (Treadaway), the newest member of Burke's team, and Jules Sutter (Raine), who is married to Frank Sutter (Pinnock), Fortitude's chief search and rescue pilot.

As the cold Arctic darkness gives way to endless summer nights, this apparently idyllic community struggles to make sense of the murderous horror that has been let loose in its heart."

Opening Day June 1, 2012

SWATHers from around the world took a trip down memory lane yesterday by celebrating the 1-year release anniversary of Snow White and the Huntsman.

The day began by reminding fans of SWATH's box office success with the retweeting of past posts including "Thank Yous" to the fans from Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth for making SWATH #1 at the box office. The day ended with two separate viewings of SWATH.

Spearheaded by @jenannrodrigues, other SWATH fansites including EB joined in a semi-marathon watching of SWATH.

Fans had two opportunities to participate, via Twitter, in what was dubbed the "#SWATHWatchAlong." Fans expressed their feelings about the film as well as other subjects (the media's failed press junkets - discussed more below) during the social media gathering.  All tweets included the hashtag to denote the celebration.

As a bonus, the hashtag trended on Twitter.

JOHNNY HARRIS ATTENDS
'MADE OF STONE' UK PREMIERE AS
'LAST DAYS ON MARS' IMPRESSED AT CANNES

Johnny Harris - 'The Stone Roses' Premieres in Manchester
Andrew Shim, Danielle Watson, Charlotte Tree, Johnny Harris, Sophie Ellerby and Jo Hartley

Johnny Harris was reunited with his 'This is England' castmates in Manchester, England on Thursday to attend the The Stone Roses: Made of Stone UK World Premiere.

In other news, the Los Angeles Times reports that Harris's film Last Days On Mars "made a strong impression" when it was recently screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.  The LA Times writes:

"Well-written by Clive Dawson in a plot initially reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” a crew member discovers a form of bacterial life on the planet and makes the mistake of thinking of taking it back to Earth. The bacterium, however, turns out to have the nasty habit of turning crew members into grotesque and violent zombies (are there any other kind?)."

"The story may be familiar, but the way Robinson has directed it is undeniably gripping. “Mars” is a nifty genre exercise, a lean, muscular and fast-moving B picture that shows that science-fiction smartly done on a budget can hold its own with anything."

Last Days On Mars will be released in the UK on September 19th.

JOHNNY HARRIS TALKS 'WELCOME TO THE PUNCH', GIVES EXCLUSIVES RE: UPCOMING PROJECT & MORE WITH EDITH BOWMAN

Earlier today, Johnny Harris appeared on the Edith Bowman BBC Radio 6 show to promote his upcoming movie Welcome to the Punch.

Harris gives a bit of an exclusive regarding his next project named Monster: Dark Continent. Dark Continent, a follow up to the (2010) film Monsters, is directed by Tom Green. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won. Noah, a haunted soldier with several tours under his belt, is sent on a mission: an American soldier has gone rogue deep in the Infected Zone, and Noah must reach him and take him out. But when Noah’s unit and transport are destroyed, he finds himself with only a young and inexperienced cadet for company – the brother of the man Noah has been sent to kill. The two soldiers must go on a life-altering journey through the dark heart of monster territory, accompanied by a young local woman to guide them. By the time the three of them reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all."
