STEWART'S 'ON THE ROAD' GETS U.S. DISTRIBUTOR & ANOTHER FESTIVAL

It has been some time in coming but 'On the Road' starring Kristen Stewart has finally obtained a U.S. distributor, according to Variety.

"AMC Networks has acquired all U.S. distrib rights to Walter Salles' adaptation of the Beat Generation tome by Jack Kerouac, to be released jointly by the company's film distribution labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects sometime this fall.

Sundance Selects/IFC Films plans a traditional theatrical roll-out..."

The  initial asking price caused the delay in securing a distributor. Variety notes that it has "noteworthy performances" and gives kudos to its fans consisting of "Twilight devotees" for their enthusiasm for the project.

"Multiple people who have seen the film agreed that it contains noteworthy performances and cinematography, but add that its two-hours-plus length and nebulous narrative make it a challenge to market to mainstream auds. But "On the Road" has more than one built-in fanbase; Kerouac fans will be eager to check out the "On the Road's" first-ever bigscreen adaptation. And "Twilight" devotees have been constantly buzzing about Stewart's role as Mary Lou since the $25 million project was announced two years ago almost to the day."

'On the Road' will have its World Premiere in a couple of weeks as it is entered into competition at the Cannes Film Festival.  In the meantime, it has been entered into another competition.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that 'On the Road' will compete at the Sydney Film Festival being held June 6th through the 17th in Australia.

SMH writes:

"What looks like an intriguing competition line-up also includes the Jack Kerouac adaptation On The Road from director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), the Oscar nominated drama Monsieur Lazhar from Canada, the Taviani brothers' Berlin prizewinner Caesar Must Die and a 320-minute, two-part Indian epic, Gangs of Wasseypur, which is described as "an exhilarating tale of vengeance" about the decades-long conflict between two violent families."
