KRISTEN STEWART FIGHTS OFF BLOCKBUSTER STIGMA AND ROCKS CANNES: RECEIVED RAVE REVIEWS FOR 'CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA' PERFORMANCE

Coming off of the film set of 'American Ultra' missing the photocall and press conference, Kristen Stewart flew in a private plane to France just in time to take Cannes by storm.

Stewart walked the red carpet Friday evening at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival for the premier for the Oliver Assayas film Clouds of Sils Maria. Stewart delighted the crowd and photogs wearing a white Chanel jumpsuit with the fiery red hair she is sporting for American Ultra

Stewart walked the carpet with the director including cast members Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace Moretz.

CoSM is one of the entries in the Official Palme d'Or Competition. Also, after screenings of the film, Stewart has been mentioned as a possible Best Actress nominee.

More after the break

CoSM is about Maria Enders (Binoche) who is at the peak of her international acting career is asked to perform in a revival play that made her famous as a young actress twenty years ago only to find herself face to face with the latest Hollywood starlet (Moretz) who takes on her old role.  Valentine (Stewart) is Enders assistant who is by her side as she deals with aging in the world of Hollywood.

Twitter was buzzing early Friday morning with critical praise of Stewart's performance from around the world. Film critics could not stop beaming on Twitter about Stewart's strong performance so much so that many stated that she stole the film.

The strongest doubters who consistently pan Stewart's acting abilities due to their hatred of Twilight (See The Playlist), had to concede that Stewart did do something special.

Unfortunately for them, they are slowly discovering what her fans always knew - the woman is talented.

The Blockbuster Stigma

Variety review headline:

"Kristen Stewart Flips a Metaphorical Middle Finger to Critics With a Great Performance at Cannes In Oliver Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria,
Kristen Stewart sticks it to anyone who ever slammed her for Twilight."

Variety boldly summed up the feelings of Stewart's supporters quite well.  Any detractor should ask themselves if being in a blockbuster should negate the talent of an actor.

Doubting Stewart's talent as if she just began acting in 2008 (the year Twilight was released) will be at their own peril.

As a young actress, Stewart has always worked alongside the best Hollywood has to offer.  Bruce Dern, Sean Penn, Jodie Foster, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, Robert DeNiro, Jesse Eisenberg, Charlize Theron etc... many of whom have either won or have been nominated for Oscars, BAFTA's as well as other top awards.

SWATH was filled with some of the best British talent that can be seen onscreen in Hollywood's top films and television programs today. Stewart worked with Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), Ray Winstone (Noah), Ian McShane (Pirates of the Carribean on Stranger Tides), Johnny Harris (Monsters: Dark Continent), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), Toby Jones (Captain America: Winter Soldier) and Sam Claflin (Hunger Games: Catching Fire).

Like Stewart, SWATH's Chris Hemsworth does not want to be boxed in with just being known for his fantasy films. Hemsworth is working on expanding his dramatic resume by taking projects such as Cyber and Heart of the Sea. Hemsworth received accolades in 2013 for his portrayal of the Formula One world champion race car driver James Hunt in the Ron Howard's drama Rush.

One thing is known, the actors who have worked with Stewart have had good things to say about her talent and her work ethic. Below Jesse L. Martin (Rent, Law and Order) expressed his feelings about Stewart's work in The Cake Eaters

Stewart is quieting the Twilight-hating noise just by doing good work.  Stewart received good reviews in regards to her performance in Camp X-Ray when it premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  Now she has shown that her work in Camp X-Ray was not a fluke by having the critics rave about her performance in CoSM.

Her performance not only is receiving praise, critics have indicated that Stewart may have stolen the show.  They were impressed that she was able to hang with or surpassed being onscreen with Binoche. This is no small feat particularly when (during filming) all the buzz was that both Binoche and Moretz would be the standouts and Stewart would be a non-factor.

Kristen Stewart has surely prevailed
